Integrated Pest Management

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a combined approach to solving your pest problems, WTC Pest Control will collect all available evidence in order to produce a control programme that gives maximum efficiency, with minimal impact on both location and environment. This approach not only  deals with the initial infestation but  assists with the prevention of it reoccurring.

All programs need to consider a non chemical approach to killing a pest and biological monitoring as well as customer education are important before any pesticides are used. Pesticides will often have to be used but not until all other methods have been eliminated. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health {COSHH} will dictate the formulations & toxicity of products that can be used.

IPM can be broken down into  stages;

1 - Survey:

The purpose of the survey is not just to detect the pest but it is the ideal time to find food sources and proofing defects and harbourage.

2 - Pest Identification

The basis of all pest control is to correctly identify the pest, once the pest as been identified a plan for the least toxic and most effective elimination of the pest can be used.

3- Hygiene

It is important to have a structured and diligent cleaning schedule in place to deny pests access to food and liquid.

4- Proofing

Some pests proofing can be straight forward for rats and mice but for very small insects it is almost impossible. However proofing measures such as fly screens to windows and doors etc can greatly reduce access.

5- Housekeeping

Keeping an area clean and tidy is very important  for reducing an are  for nesting for rats and mice and breeding sites insects. By denying pests any of the above factors then you can reduce the chance of sustaining an infestation.

6- Chemical control

The use of chemical control is often necessary in pest control, but in a IPM system it should be used as a last resort.

7- Education

In commercial  premises the education of staff in pest recognition and the importance of good hygiene will go along way in improving any pest management system.
